    Getting bleed and safe zones right is the difference between packaging that looks crisp on the shelf and a print run ruined by white edges or trimmed-off logos.     Whether you’re setting up a folding carton, a product label, a corrugated shipping box or a pouch, the same principles apply: extend your background past the cut, keep important content away from the edge, and supply the file in the right colour mode and resolution.     What is bleed in printing?

    Bleed is the area of artwork that extends beyond the trim line — the line where the printed sheet is finally cut to size. Printing presses and die-cutters are precise, but not perfect: the cut can drift by a fraction of a millimetre. If your coloured background stops exactly at the trim line, any drift exposes the unprinted paper underneath, leaving a thin white sliver along the edge.

    By running the background a few millimetres past the trim (typically 2–5 mm on every side), you give the cutter a margin of error. No matter where the blade lands within that range, colour reaches the very edge.     What is a safe zone?

    If bleed protects the outside, the safe zone protects the inside. It’s a margin set in from the trim line — usually 3–7 mm — that marks where it is safe to place anything you can’t afford to lose: logos, brand names, legal text, barcodes, ingredient panels and contact details.

    Just as the cut can drift outward into the bleed, it can drift inward toward your content. Keeping critical elements inside the safe zone means a slight misalignment never clips a letter or crops your logo.     Why bleed is important for packaging

    Packaging is cut, creased, folded and sometimes die-cut into complex shapes, so it accumulates more tolerance than a simple flyer. A folding carton might pass through cutting, creasing and gluing; a corrugated box is often flexo-printed on an absorbent liner where registration is looser. Each step adds a little movement, and bleed is what keeps the result clean across all of them.

    Missing bleed is one of the most common reasons a printer rejects a packaging file or sends it back for revision — which means lost time and delayed production. Building correct bleed in from the beginning keeps your project on schedule and your packaging looking professional. The same goes for the safe zone: respecting it is the simplest way to make sure your design survives the trip from screen to shelf.

    Packaging artwork guidelines

    Beyond bleed and safe zones, a few packaging design specifications apply to almost every job:

    • Build artwork at 100% final size whenever possible, with bleed added on all sides.
    • Work in CMYK (or Pantone spot colours) — never send RGB to a commercial printer.
    • Use 300 DPI for raster images at final size; keep logos and text as vector.
    • Request a packaging dieline template from your printer and design on top of it.
    • Keep text and logos inside the safe zone, and well clear of folds, creases and glue areas.
    • Export a press-ready PDF with bleed and crop marks, fonts outlined or embedded.

    A dieline is the flat blueprint of your package showing cut lines, fold/crease lines and glue tabs. Designing on the dieline keeps your artwork aligned to the structure so nothing important lands on a fold.

    Label bleed requirements

    Labels are usually the most forgiving format, with a 2 mm bleed and a 3 mm safe zone working for most jobs. The catch is the shape: many labels are die-cut to ovals, rounded rectangles or custom outlines, so your bleed must follow the die line rather than a plain rectangle. For wrap-around labels, also plan the seam where the label start and end overlap, and avoid placing key elements across it.     Folding carton artwork setup

    Folding cartons need a 3 mm bleed and around a 5 mm safe zone, but the structure drives the layout. Extend background colour fully across every panel and into the bleed, and keep text and logos away from crease lines so they don’t distort when the carton is folded. Pay attention to glue flaps — areas that will be hidden or bonded shouldn’t carry critical artwork. Designing directly on the supplied dieline is the best way to keep panels, tucks and flaps correctly aligned.

    Corrugated box design specifications

    Corrugated boxes are often printed flexographically on a relatively coarse liner, so tolerances are wider: plan for around 5 mm bleed and a 7 mm safe zone. Flexo doesn’t hold fine detail or small reversed-out type as well as litho, so keep text larger, lines bolder and registration-dependent designs simple. For high-quality graphics on corrugated, litho-lamination is an alternative, but the safe-zone discipline stays the same. When in doubt, give the artwork more breathing room than you would on a carton.

    CMYK vs RGB for packaging

    Screens emit light and mix colour in RGB; presses lay down ink and mix in CMYK. The two gamuts don’t match, so a bright RGB blue or vivid green can shift dramatically when converted for print. To avoid surprises, set your document to CMYK from the start and choose colours within the print gamut, or specify Pantone spot colours for brand-critical hues. If exact colour matters, ask for a physical proof — no on-screen preview, including ours, is a substitute for ink on your actual substrate.
